Presented paper attempts to study the significance of the meṙon within the Armenian Apostolic Church, focusing on both its symbolic and mystical attributes. Beginning with an exploration of the components of meṙon, the study then delves into the spiritual and religious implications of this sacred oil in Armenian tradition. Not only does meṙon possess a pleasing aroma, but it also symbolizes the gifts of the Holy Spirit within the Armenian Apostolic Church. By examining the ingredients and symbolic meanings associated with meṙon according to Armenian sources, the research highlights the material aspects of this sacred oil. Insights from vardapets on the mystical and purifying qualities of meṙon are analyzed, as well as the devotional practices surrounding its use. Testimonials from vardapets further illuminate the symbolic significance of these ingredients, in particular olive oil and balm, the main components of meṙon. In his ban xciii, for example, Grigor Narekac‘i stressed the importance of the meṙon’s potency and symbolism as a vital tool for a relationship with God and as representing spiritual enlightenment, healing, and protection.
The vardapets writings reveal not only mystical content but also the deep popular devotion surrounding the meṙon, evident in the reverence and special adoration of the oil by Armenian faithful, as well as in common proverbs and expressions. Throughout centuries, the meṙon has been revered with almost divine worship and is defined also by the expression astowacagorcak meṙon, elaborated by eminent figures such as T‘ovma Mecop‘ec‘i and the catholicos Simēon I Erewanc‘i. According to this expression, the meṙon is viewed as a gift from God that operates divinely to purify, sanctify, and elevate souls, transforming them into divine beings. This sense of adoration towards the meṙon has persisted over time, encapsulating the profound spiritual and cultural significance attached to this sacred oil in Armenian tradition.
