The study examines the 18th-century ecclesiastical development and social emancipation of the Greek Catholic churches in Habsburg-ruled Hungary and Transylvania, focusing specifically on the 1773 Vienna Episcopal Synod. Maria Theresa's enlightened church policy opened new horizons for the marginalized Byzantine-rite communities previously subordinated to the Latin-rite hierarchy. This led to the canonical erection of the Eparchy of Mukachevo in 1771. Convened by the empress in the center of imperial power, the synod aimed to review and harmonize the religious life of the particular churches. The consultations focused on the publications of the Viennese Oriental Press (Typographia Orientalis), censorship regulations, the reduction of holy days, and stole fees. The synod also brought liturgical-theological disputes to the surface (the Filioque controversy, the calendar issue), during which the bishops of Mukachevo, Ivan Bradach and Andriy Bachynsky, acted as consistent defenders of Byzantine traditions.
