Byzantine-Rite Christians in the Diocese of Pécs During the Era of the Árpád Dynasty This year marks the centenary of the creation of the historical antecedent of the Byzantine-rite Eparchy of Miskolc, the Apostolic Exarchate of Miskolc. This event may afford an opportunity to examine the presence of the Byzantine Rite in the Diocese of Pécs, a diocese heavily populated by Kabars (Khazar rebels who had joined the Magyar confederation prior to the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin), during the era of the Árpád Dynasty. At the time of the Hungarian Conquest, two Cuman-Kabar chieftains settled in the area: Voyta in the southern part of Tolna County and Etu in Baranya County. In general, the historiography of Hungarian Byzantine-rite Christians in the Árpád era may be described as lacking in sources. Apart from the loss or deliberate destruction of sources, this circumstance may have been caused by concealment and falsification. Thus, in addition to written records, all other – archaeological, architectural, history-of-art-related, etc. – information must also be considered to establish the truth.
